I'll try to make this brief. :0) Today, August 5th, is National Underwear Day.
National Underwear Day was introduced in 2003 by Freshpair.com as a way to "shout out loud that underwear isn't just the first thing you put on and the last thing you take off, but the most important thing you wear all day". The people at Freshpair.com would like people to feel more free to start mentioning the "un-mentionables".
In the beginning, as part of the celebration, models hit the streets of New York wearing nothing but their skivvies and asking New Yorkers and tourists alike to sign a petition to make National Underwear Day an official day of appreciation, and now includes star-studded fashion shows and undie give-aways.
As part of the extravaganza, Freshpair.com polls the public to find out what their underwear habits and preferences are. (In other words, to find out what they're wearin' under there. Under where?) They found that 80% of Americans never change the type of underwear that they wear (c'mon people, change your underwear!) and that 60% are wearing underwear that doesn't fit right (can we say wedgie?). They also found that 24% of American men have a lucky pair of underwear, and that 40% of men prefer briefs to 10%, who prefer boxers (which begs the question, what are the other 50% wearing? Hmmm). And 34% of women match their bras to their panties.
Call me old school, but I feel that underwear should stay behind buttoned blouses and under zipped pants. But I certainly do love a comfy set of underwear and I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with talking about undies and how to find some cutesies with a great fit.
In closing, I tried to find a fun video about underwear but they were all pretty obscene (whodathunkit?) But here's a cute one with Patrick Dempsey on The Ellen Degeneres Show. I guess you could call it an "undie film". :0)
